Steps To Follow After WordPress Installation
Some of my friends ask me about it, and I thought I have to share some of my view on it. There are some basic steps every new blogger should follow when they just set up there blog.
1. Meta Tag Setup: This is the first step that you should follow before you do anything with your blog. Set proper title, description and meta tag. If you have ‘all in one SEO plugin‘ installed in your blog then your could be lot easier. You can then able to set meta tag for each post and pages. Check my SEO plugin list which will definitely help you to get good page rank on search engine.
2. Permalink Setup: This is another most important part to optimize your blog for search engine and help both your visitor and search engine. Here you will found 4 predefined options. The default one is ‘http://yoursite.com/?p=123′ and you have to avoid it if you want to help your reader and search engine. The most one is “Month and name’ but you can customize your and I recommend you to use ‘/%post%/’ as most SEO guru thinks this is better than other methods. You may have a question why I am not using it? Because I able to know it recently and if I go with it then I have to install redirecting plugin and setup 244 post which is very timed consuming if a single person work on it, so I am avoiding it.
3. Add category: Category always helps your user to find post related to their interest. So you should create some category related to your blog subject.
4. Add Themes: The wordpress default theme is not enough to make your site look interesting. You can find themes on WordPress Official site or you can visit here.
5. Discussion Setup: This is another important setup that you have to follow. There are self explained features in wordpress discussion setting. I recommend you to uncheck ‘Users must be registered and logged into comment’ and check ‘Comment author must have a previously approved comment’.
6. Media Setup: If your site is based on image then it is good to setup this properly. I recommend you allow only thumbnail and put other 2 values to 0. This way you can prevent wordpress to eat your space as wordpress store each created image if you setup other 2 option. It is better to upload image in tinypic.com with your desired setup and then save the uploaded image and then upload it in wordpress.
7. Plugin Setup: Plugin help you to do things which you can’t do normally. There are huge list of plugin which you can use to fulfill your need. You can search for desired plugins in WordPress.Org. Some useful pluins are Akismet, All in One SEO Pack and Google XML Sitemaps .
This is the most basic step in my mind you have to follow setting up your wordpress blog.
