Learn With Me: Introduction to Linux!
I am posting this post about Linux specially for newbie’s, who want to understand Linux. This is a learn with me series.
First of all what is Linux?
Linux is freeware open source operating system and anyone can make changes in it. Linux is a multitasking and multi user operating system. It means that many people can run many different applications one same computer at the same time. Linux got its name by its original developer Linux Torvalds.
How its different from Windows?
1. The Linux GUI is optional while Windows GUI is an integral component of operating system. Linux typically provides two GUIs, KDE and Gnome.
2. One Thing Linux can do that Windows cannot, i.e., you can run LINUX from a CD without installing the whole operating system and software. To run Windows, it has to be first installed in your hard disk.
3. One major constraint is Software restrictions. A program written for Linux will not run under Windows and vice-versa. [You need some third party software like Wine to run Windows program in Linux]
4. Linux is less costly or free, Windows in expensive.
Should we use it?
My opinion is that, you’ll remain much happier being a Windows Expert than being a Linux novice user.
