Ransomware is a new type of threat that lock down whole system and demand a ransom to unlock it again. This new type of malware usually display a notice that represent any company or law enforcement agencies which falsely claim that the user’s system had been used for illegal activities, or contains illegal content such as pornography and unlawfully obtained software. And, the user have to pay to obtain a decrypt software or unlock key.

Such malware normally enter system through a vulnerable network or downloaded file. The program then run payload and encrypt personal files on hard disk, restrict interaction with system by overriding explorer.exe in the Windows registry as the default shell. Even worst, sometime ransomware modify the master boot record, not allowing the operating system to start at all until it is repaired.

How To Remove Ransomware?

Kaspersky Lab developed an utility named Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker that especially designed to remove ransomware. Since the ransomware usually infect boot record thus computer can’t start normally, Kaspersky provides this tool as a bootable ISO image that can be burned to a CD or DVD or used to create a bootable USB drive. Once your bootable media is ready, boot the system with Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker and then follow the onscreen instruction to remove suspicious program from your computer.

Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker actually disinfect registries of all operating systems installed on the computer (including operating systems installed on different partitions or in different folders on one partition) and disinfect user registry trees but it does not clear infected files. To clear infected files you should use a bootable rescue disk first and then use a good antivirus to scan your whole system to find and remove possible infected files.

Remember, Kaspersky WindowsUnlocker is not an antivirus scanner and can only remove ransomware.
