Securing your wordpress blog is most important part of your blogging. I am not talking about hacker but I am talking about spammer. The spammer grow simultaneously with your blog. It effects your actual page-view and unique hits. That is not the end if you don’t have to block these spammer then they will link your site to wrong site which will effect your site ranking. Sometime it’s hard to recognize them spammer as they reply like regular visitor but they always use a bad URL link. By default wordpress (v 2.7) don’t have the ability to ban those IP to reply in your site. You have to use certain policies to block them permanently. Here I show 3 way to protect your wordpress blog from those culprits.

1. Akismet Plugin: This plugin come with wordpress version and this is very much useful. All you need to get a WordPress.Com API key. It then blocks all comment come with a link. However the draw back is you can’t block them permanently. Also if you want to reduce your database space you need to check it and delete those unlawful comment manually.

2. Buildin Setting Option: Wordpress have a build in option to mark comment as spam. Remember it will mark those comment as spam but don’t have the ability to block them. You can find this option under ‘Discussion’ option of ‘Settings’ section. Under Discussion option you can find the comment Blacklist option where you can put that name, URL, e-mail, or IP which you want to blacklist.

3. WP-Ban Plugin: This is the most useful plugin I found till now to block those culprits. It has the ability to block those spammer permanently. All you need to enlist those IP, hostname or user agent properly using ban option under settings after installing this plugin. It will display a custom ban message when the banned IP, IP range, host name, user agent or referrer URL tries to visit you blog.
