7 Things to do after Wordpress installation

Now you installed your blog, so what’s next! Start posting your article? Nope, just see your website, is it attractive? I don’t think so. That’s not only one issue, there are some internal issue we have to take care off.

1. Permalink: Permalink is a link by which other able to find your post. By default Wordpress permalinks not come with SEO. We have to make it Search Engine friendly, so that we can get search engine traffic. The default one is ‘http://yoursite.com/?p=123′ and you have to avoid it if you want to help your reader and search engine. The most used one is “Month and name” but you can customize your and I recommend you to use “/%post%/” as most SEO guru thinks this is better than other methods.

2. Change Themes: This is the next important thing for you. You have to make your blog attractive to your visitor. You can get free Wordpress theme on Wordpress.Org. Google search also provide some handy result. (installation guide: upload the themes on themes folder located under wp-contents on your webspace)

3. Install plugins: By default Wordpress come with two plugin. Just install akismet and put your API key which you will get after registering Wordpress.Com. I will provide a video instruction about plugin installation process soon. You can get plugin information on Wordpress.Org under Extended navigation menu.

4. Set Meta Tags: This is that powerful feature which push blogger.com back. You can add meta tag in each article. All you need to do is install a SEO plugin. I like ‘All in One SEO‘ & ‘SEO Platinum‘. Use any of them to meta tag your home page as well as single articles.

5. Discussion Setup: This is another important setup that you have to follow. There are self explained features in Wordpress discussion setting. I recommend you to uncheck “Users must be registered and logged into comment” and check “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”.

6. Media Setup: If your site is based on image then it is good to setup this properly. I recommend you allow only thumbnail and put other 2 values to 0. This way you can prevent Wordpress to eat your space as Wordpress store each created image if you setup other 2 option. It is better to upload image in tinypic.com with your desired setup and then save the uploaded image and then upload it in Wordpress or use free tools like Jing to resizing it.

7. Create Categories: It’s better to create categories as it help you on future. It makes you easy to find and edit a post on dashboard also help you and your user to surf easily on your website.
