Floppy drive is old fashion now, but still have its value when you think about recovery disk or something similar. It’s well known fact that too much use of a floppy device make it unstable, so it will be great idea if we create a virtual drive to run those floppy devices without inputting it, like we do with CD by creating virtual CD drive.
All you need to do, first create an image file of that floppy disk and then just install Virtual Floppy Drive (VFD) and later run that image file using VFD. You must run this tool as Administrator to make it work. You can create up to two virtual floppy drive using this utility.

This tool also compatible with Windows NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions)

I never thought we can use Floppy drive in Windows 7. That’s amazing and may be sometimes we will still need to use them. Bookmark the post. Thanks for info sharing.

Interesting feature, Is there any floppy drive software for XP too?
You should read the complete article. Please don’t comment after reading headline. Bad practice.
I read the entire article and it still doesn’t work with Win7 x64.
Generates the error:
“Does not run on 95/98/ME”
even when run as Administrator and in compatibility mode.
It work fine in my 32-bit system. I will definitely ask the developer about this and will email you if get any solution.
Yes he is right I have the Exact same problem no matter what I do it keeps popping up with this
vfdwin:
(Big Red X) (X) Virtual Floopy Disk does not run on windows 95/98/ME
What gives man. Also the person who made this or is has helped with it says that there is a 64 bit driver bypass its something like vfd.sys it is meant to help with unsigned 64 bit drivers since that is what 64 bit is good at it won’t work and I don’t know if that would have something to do with it all I know is I need this thign to work or at least to get Dos files onto a USB Drive So I can fix my GPU Chips BIOS like now its really urgent.
ugh I’m starting to think win7 64bit is too safe
I’m having the same problem Al is with Windows7 – 64bit
“Does not run on 95/98/ME”
Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Tom
Sorry! I use Windows 7 32bit. I will contact the developer. He may help you.
Actually…By reading the Developers web site for Virtual Floppy Drive, It states that this utility is DOES NOT work with 64bit machines.
Perhaps I read this wrong. :/
It even has code implemented in it to prevent it from doing so.
I have win 7 x64, and when i try to use this, the program installs the driver, but then when I try to start the driver, the driver is blocked from loading. I have running as admin, after so many attempts to get the driver to boot, Windows tells me the signature isn’t digitally signed, and must be for Win 7 to run it.. So anyone know what I am doing wrong?
On x64 systems an older version vfd-050404.zip is working, but not stright away.
VFD Instructions for Vista 64 bit:
1. Download the file vfd_x64.zip form http://levicki.net/downloads/ and replace the files in vfd directory.
2. Reboot the PC and enter the Vista startup menu either by pressing F8 or ESC and select the option which turn off requiring for device drivers to be digitally signed.
3. Run the vfdwin.exe (version 21-050404) by right clicking and running as administrator. Click allow.
4. Click the browse button and select the vfd.sys file (repaced form the vfd_x64.zip in step 1). Floppy drive should then install and start and a drive letter will be able to be selected.
5. You might get a popup window about vista requiring a device driver to be digitally signed but you can just close it and it will not cause the virtual floppy program to end (thanks to step 2).
6. Open and mount image and enjoy…
I got message “Does not run on 95/98/ME” on my WIndows 7 64-bit system … So CloudGT4, i don’t understond how it could ‘work’ for you.
You simply have to disable ‘digital signed driver check’.
Bart, I test it in my 32bit system, can’t say anything about 64bit right now.
Update, after disabling the digital signed driver check, I get the same issue as everyone else with 64bit. “Does not run on 95/98/me”
Guess we will have to contact the developer and see if there will be a 64bit driver soon
A very unworthy tip.
Why would someone run Windows 7 outside of 64bit mode? I do hope you find a job so you no longer have to run Windows 7 32bit mode on 32bit hardware.
I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Some of us still have recover floppy drive and this tool going to help them to use that recover drive without a real floppy driver.
Confirmed not working on Win 7 x64. Attempts to disable digitally signed drivers still do not allow program to function properly.
Thanks for this information Nick. I tested it in 32bit system.
Me pueden decir como hicieron funcionar en windows 7 xq le doy en modo compatibilidad o ejecutar como administrador y nada no me funciona!
“Note that 64-bit Windows does not support running 16-bit Windows-based applications. The primary reason is that handles have 32 significant bits on 64-bit Windows. Therefore, handles cannot be truncated and passed to 16-bit applications without loss of data. Attempts to launch 16-bit applications fail with the following error: ERROR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT.”
This means you can’t even use an emulator, you have to reprogram the source. The developer invites you to do so on his site.
what am i doing wrong. running win7 ultimate 32 bit, keep getting access denied.
can you tell me what i need to do. thanks
a much easier way I use…, that is if you have a usb stick and the program will only take data from the drive letter A, is:
1. put the usb stick in, let it install
2. open Disk Management
3. delete the drive letter, then add the drive letter A:
[...] User Virtual Floppy Drive | Download Virtual Floppy Drive software for free at SourceForge.net How to get a virtual floppy drive in Windows 7? " It is so simple to be happy, but it is so difficult to be simple" [...]
People sometimes forget that old technology can still be useful in some cases. Anyway I tested this on Win7 and it works perfectly.
on what windows 7 32 bit ? and what version of VFD Ive been messing with it for 4 hours and it does not work on win 7 64 sp1
vfd 08206 even with the 64 bit .sys file
if you are going to post something works it would be polite to post the details for those of us that are having problems
Josh R. is right, your are a genius man, I have needed to make a progam think that I have a floppy with some key files on it, and Opening disk management and changing the letter of the USB flash drive and changing to A: has seemed to work, thanks.
PS. I am running Windows 7 x64 and have been having all the trouble you guys have for a few weeks now, hope this works for you
i used win7 32 bit but i can not install vfd….any body help me????
