Page Rank Policy and How To Improve It Guide
This is my first article in weekly post section which will release in each Friday from now.
PageRank which is simplified to PR, the most powerful word to most webmaster; from the beginner to intermediate all always think about it. Whenever the page rank update some faces rejoice, some faces became hard and some faces goes bloodless. Today I will try to describe what is PageRank? What are those facts PageRank follows? and How you can improve your page rank? I know I took the most hard subject but I believe I can describe it in spite of my bad English.
What is PageRank(PR)?
If we think simple then we can call it a voting system. Only difference is that there is no democracy over there. Anyone can vote as much time as they want. But the fact is no human going to put there vote. Here URL is the voter who vote another URL. PageRank is one of more than 100 factors Google uses in the ranking of you website; the higher the page rank, the more important it get during search.
A Small History of PageRank
The name “PageRank” is a trademark of Google, and the PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999 ). However, the patent is assigned to Stanford University and not to Google. Google has exclusive license rights on the patent from Stanford University. The university received 1.8 million shares in exchange for the patent, which were sold in 2005 for $336 million US Dollars.
Hey don’t worry! I am not going to describe about the algorithm of PageRank. You can find it here.
Some PageRank Policy You Must Know:-
I am now going to discuss about some policy PageRank have and you must know about it. You must know spammer will get hard punish from google. As the link will be banned from Google for a month or ever and will be moved from database further.
1. Links:- It is well known that the more your inbound link (number of links pointing at your page) the higher your page rank. Beside that you have to know the inbound link history data used for calculation: how often links to your page are updated? Which is the anchor text for those links? A bunch of links with the same anchor text may indicate spam activity. Many links with different anchor text may indicate fresh and interesting contents. Historical data include also the time your website takes to get inbound links: too many inbound links in a too short period of time may indicate spam activity.
2. Site click through rates (CTR):- The sites click through rates is another important thing we have to look out. CTR may now be monitored through cache, temporary files, bookmarks and favorites via the Google toolbar or desktop tools. It actually vary on some seasonal factor like a Cricket related site get higher page rank during a World Cup. So the higher the CTR the more chance to win.
3. Domain Names:- How much year the domain is registered is one of the factor you have to realise to get good page rank. Google sometime consider a 1year registered domain owner as a spammer. So the higher period your domain is registered with the more trust you gain.
4. Contents:- Content is always a factor on Page Ranking. Relevant and fresh contents are preferred. Content scoring is also related to users’ behaviour, because even a stale content may be still useful (i.e. a biography). You don’t need to update a page if that is not out-dated. Significant changes in contents are taken into account. The Date a page is updated is recorded. Websites contents should be updated and increased on a regular basis, just like an “organic growth”. Too much pages added in a short period may be a spam indication (same like links).
5. Users’ behaviour:- The domain user behaviour is another important thing for good PageRank. According to google policy,”Information relating to how often the document is selected when the document is included in a set of search results”. This mean that there’s a historic variable that calculates a ratio between the number of times your page appears into the results and the number of times users click on it.
6. Traffic:- The higher the traffic the higher the PageRank.
This are only 6 out of 100 issues which Google follows to calculate PageRank. They not reveal it to stop false activity on PageRank.
How Google Calculate Spam:-
There is some certain policy which is publicly known about calculating Spam activity by Google. Those are:-
1. Multiple domains with the same contents. Not uncommon to see many similar websites ranking high for certain keywords then disappear from index after a certain period of time (usually one month)
2. Google’s ABUSE service. Based on users’ input. Users can report a website they suspect it’s spamming the search engine to Google abuse service. The website will be investigated (by a human) and, if it’s caught on some spamming activities is banned.
3. Keyword Stuffing. Pages that present same keyword repeated over and over usually rank high for a short period of time then disappear from index. Keyword Stuffing in fact is considered the most annoying spam practice.
Now how to improve your page rank?
This is most desire thing to webmaster. Specially for those who have lower PR or for those who have some worries in there face for PR decreasing fact. The above discussion give us some idea on how to improve page ranking. Now I will try to simplify it.
1. High Quality Fresh Content: Create content which is more effective and related to your site need. Which stick your user on the page and force them to share with their friends.
2. Submit in Search Engine:- Try to submit your site on major search engine and local directory. Try to submit manually. If you have a RSS feed the submit those feed in RSS search engine.
3. Publicize your site: Try to publicize your site. Like share it with your friends, family, relatives etc. Your site url should be listed every where which have an interact with you. Like:-
- Business cards
- Letterhead
- Newsletters
- Brochures
- Press Releases
- Fax cover sheets
- Email signatures
4. Ask Linkback to high PR site:- Getting other “good” websites to link to yours usually helps your website’s PageRank and ranking on Google.
Note: If your site links to unlisted websites, your website might also be removed from Google’s index.
5. Motivate High Ranked Site to Linked With:- As I already explain high ranked site help you to increase your site rank. It is hard to always ask them to link with so try to post content which will motivate them to link with you.
6. Think Twice Approving Link Back:- Don’t try to approve all link back request. Check the site type and content; and one more thing you must know 0PR site might decrease your PageRank if they don’t have quality content.
7. Keep your site up:- The site should be up always. If your website is not accessible for an extended period of time, Google may reduce the ranking of your site.
8. Free Give Away:- Try to produce something under Creative Commons License like unique article or screen saver etc. Enable others to copy, distribute, and make derivative works, as long as they give You credit and link to Your Site.
9. Use Translator:- Try to use translator in your website it will localize your site and give you more back link and traffic.
10. Search Google for your website:- Instead of entering your URL into your browser, search Google for your site. Google is more apt to improve the ranking of a site that users seek and visit than one that gets no traffic from Google.
11. Monitor your site performance:- Try to monitor your site performance. Like check inbound link, page rank, digged ratio and so on. I will very soon produce an article in my regular article section soon. Please check back. Till then you can use popuri.us.
This is all I able to research through this one week. If you have your idea please share it.

If you use Firefox, then I suggest SEOQuake toolbar, check the site age using who is, post quality and permalink structure. Check PR and Alexa value if neccessary. You can also use WOT plugin for Firefox to check if that site safe or not. If you need help then join me on piyadasworld[a]gtalk.com
